Story by SA Mary Reed Photos by LI2 Ron Brendemihl and LI1 Curly Verro YOU'RE DOING SWELL, HON—Katy Vance changes a flat tire on the way back from Landmannalaugar. From closest to furthest observers are; Bob Vance (her husband). Lerov Lirot, and Joel Bugner. What have you been doing in your spare time? Sleeping? Eating? How much of Iceland have you really seen? Does the base offer enough to do for you, or would you like to do more? Well, the Rocky Road 4-Wheelers Club, with nearly 100 members, is open to anyone interested in seeing the country any and every weekend you could wish. And you don't even have to own a 4-wheel drive vehicle to belong, or any vehicle at all. Almost every weekend the Rocky Road 4-Wheelers get off base and camp at one of the many beautiful sites of Iceland. They either set up a tent and do their own cooking or sleep in their vehicles and cook as well; whatever is more conven- ient. Most of these sites are fd maintained by Icelandic tourist ag" encies. Many have huts scattered around the spots, for those without tents. One of the club's favorite places is located in the southern interior of the country, called Landmannalaugar. The hot river is what makes Landmannalaugar so at- tractive to visitors. The warm pool is swimmable any time of the year. Thorsmork, which is located on the southern coast of Iceland, has a large glacier, a valley, and riv- ers which are beautiful and fun to hike around. In the northern portion of Ice- land is a huge resort area called Akureyri, where recreational facil- ities are plentiful. Skiing or treking through the beautiful moun tains are two of the offerings of Akureyri. And Husafell, also near the southern interior of Iceland, has a small forrest and caves, and a glacier. Traveling with the Rocky Road 4- vheelers is a great opportunity to get pictures for the folks back home who don't have the foggiest idea of what Iceland looks like, and for your own personal collec- tion as well. Pictures that have been taken by the present 4-wheelers will be shown Sunday at 4 p.m. in the And- rews Family Theater. For anyone who wishes to get an idea of what they would be seeing, the presenta- tion is free of charge. Not just sightseeing The advantage to joining the 4- Wheel Drive Club rather than going on a tour by any of the various sponsors on base is the fact that a 4-wheel drive vehicle will drive through many areas a bus or other vehicle can't get into.
