Hmmn? What's to do? Well! There's
plenty to do, both on and off base
as many of us have already discover-
ed. In addition to the many sights
and activities associated with being
in this unique and beautiful coun-
try called Iceland, the Recreation
Department includes 28 sub-depart-
nents to meet the high demand for
recreational activity. These include
tours to various points in Iceland
and overseas, athletics and various
interest or hobby centers.
The department's budget of about
five million dollars, including in-
ventory, assures personnel and de-
pendents stationed here that a wide
variety of services and facilities
will be available for their use. In-
come from fees for some of the ac-
tivities accounts for only a frac-
tion of the total budget.
Also, each person's voice may be
heard in the planning of the various

services available. The Composite Recreation Fund Committee (for enlisted personnel)
and the Composite Recreation Fund Council (for officers) meet during the second
month of each quarter on the 1st (committee) and 2nd (council) Thursdays of the
month at 1:30 p.m. Meetings are held in the recreation department conference room,
Bldg. T-170. The next meetings are, therefore, Nov. 6th and Nov. 13th.
Each command has a representative to the committees. People with suggestions for
improving existing facilities/activities, with ideas for new activities, or who are
interested in having their voice heard may contact their representative and/or
attend the meetings. You can hav

Movies are shown daily, tours
are regularly scheduled and the var-

people stationed here.
The tour office offers booklets
containing information on scheduled
tours or you can call their office
for the latest information on up-
coming excursions.
The Hvitarbakki Recreational
lodge is operated by the department.
The Lodge, in Borgurfjordur Valley,
is about 130 miles northeast of Kef-
lavik. Fishing, hunting, camping,
horseback riding, swimming, and
sightseeing are available there.
The lodge itself has eight rooms
to rent, a large kitchen which
guests may use, a sauna bath, a sit-
ting room and a comfortable lounge.
Campsites are available for about
100 campers. Charges are reasonable
and the resident manager can assist
guests in finding out about the many
things to do in the area.
Tours are scheduled for such
places as Selfoss, Skogarfoss, Whale
Bay, Fljotshild, Gullfoss, Geysir,
Hveragerdi, Borgarfjordur, Thingvel-
lier, Thjorsardalur, Husafell, and
various overseas tours. Don't miss
the chance to tour this unique land
of "frost and fire."
Iceland does have some of the
World's most spectacular scenery.
Waterfalls tumbling from near mile-
high precipices, geysers shooting up
to the sky, hot springs suddenly
shooting up a few feet from where
you stand, glaciers that give a view
into the Ice Age, volcanoes that
have erupted even in the past weeks
and beautiful rivers, streams, and
lakes with great fishing opportuni-
ties.
The handouts also contain help-
ful hints to assist you in planning
any trips and better prepare you for
your adventures.
Also, the Recreation Department
is regarded as a single member of
the Keflavik Golf Association and
golf passes may be obtained prior to
use of the nine-hole course located
five miles from the base. Passes are
available at the base gym.
You can become involved in both
the activities and the planning of
recreational activities as you de-
sire. If it's softball, weightlift-
ing, camping, or whatever, the Rec-
reation Department can be of ser-
vice. Don't hesitate to find out
what's happening and join the fun.
Attend the meetings, utilize the
many facilities, and you'll find the
recreational opportunities rewarding.
