The White Falcon - 18.09.1981, Blaðsíða 9
White Falcon 9 September 18, 1981 AF expecting shortage of NCOs by FY 82 The Air Force is taking steps to build experience in its most critical noncommissioned officer skills. With a planned increase of 55,000 enlisted authorizations in the next five years, a shortage in critical sortie-generating skills is expected by the end of fiscal 1982, say Air Force officials. Some 80 percent of the shortage will be in avionics, aircraft systems, aircraft maintenance and munitions and weapons maintenance specialties. Since the ability to generate aircraft sorties and keep the planes flying most directly affects ability to fight and win, these shortages are of utmost concern to Fiscal year 82 Selective Reen- listment Bonus (SRB) Program changes are effective October 1, 1981. The following AFSC's (and SHREDOUTS thereto) will be authorized SRB's in the ZONES and multiple levels indicated: ZONE A: (multiple one) 206X0; 293X3; 302X0; 304X4; 306X2; 324X0; 404X1; 542X1; 542X2; 545X1; 552X2; 751X2; 905X0. ZONE B: (multiple one) 201X1; 203X0; 206X0; 274X0; 275X0; 293X3; 304X1; 304X4; 304X5; 307X0; 326X0; 431X0; 733X1. ZONE C: (multiple one) 113X0; 306X0; 322X2; 431X2; 904X1. The following AFSC's (and SHRED- OUTS thereto) will increase to mul- senior Air Force officials. While Air Force and government leaders have worked hard over the past two years to improve the military career outlook with a sub- stantantial pay increase and variable housing, for example, the experience loss of middle-to-senior NCOs is being felt and will con- tinue to be felt over the next few years. An initiative to improve these sortie-generating skills has been a restructuring of the grades in the skills to allow specialties to be more self-supporting, that is, to allow the specialties to grow the supervisors needed. In addition, although some retraining may still tiple levels indicated effective October 1, 1981. Zielinski, AFI staff career advisor, at ext. 7723. be required in the higher grades, most retraining will be concen- trated at the staff sergeant level and below, thus allowing experience to grow along with rank in critical skills. More attention has been focused on prior-service recruiting, especially in the critically short skills. An increase in the selec- tive re-enlistment bonus and the selective continuation of career NCOs in the aircraft generation skills will also help. Another area that is being worked is the return of qualified NCOs from other, better-manned skills back into maintenance skills.
