Chess champion
Frank Fisher, above playing Viktor Korchnoi at a simultaneous chess ex-
hibition in April, defeated ll other opponents last weekend to win the
NATO Base Chess Championship. Fisher will travel to St. Mawgan, England
in October for the Northern European Regional Chess Tournament, to repre-
sent the NATO Base. (above-left) Svavar G. Svavarsson, who directed the

title, qualifies for
European tourney
Frank Fisher, of the Iceland
Defense Force Public Affairs Office
won 11 straight matches this weekend
enroute to the NATO Base Chess
Championship.
The tournament, which was held
Saturday and Sunday at the USO,
was sponsored by the MWR Department
and the USO. Svavar G. Svavarsson,
a Chess Master, donated his time and
directed the event.
Stan Hardesty, the second place
finisher with a 10-1 record, and
Fisher were paired in the last
round when both were undefeated.
Fisher won the game in 38 moves
playing the black side of the
Queens Gambit Declined.
As the NATO Base Champion,
Fisher qualifies for the Northern^^^
European Regional Chess Tournamen^^^
to be held October 24 & 25 at St.
Mawgan, England.
