Football
A few National Football League
teams that were expected to do big
things this season are having a
tough time of it in the early going.
New England suffered its second
loss Sunday at the hands of the
Philadelphia Eagles, 13-3.
Cleveland and Pittsburgh are at the
bottom of the AFC Central Division,
both teams with 0-2 marks. Cleve-
land dropped their game to the
Houston Oilers, 9-3, while Pitts-
burgh was upset by Miami 33-30 on
Thursday.
In the NFC, Los Angeles, Chicago
and Minnesota lead the way as the
early season flops. L.A. lost a
divisional game to the New Orleans
Saints, 23-17, Chicago lost to San
Francisco 28-17, and Oakland handled
Minnesota easily Monday night.
In other NFL action from Sunday,
Atlanta bowled over Green Bay 31-17;
the Giants surprised the Redskins
17-7; Buffalo tripped Baltimore
35-3; Kansas City beat Tampa Bay
19-10; Cincinnati just slipped past
the New York Jets 30-31; Seattle
defeated Denver 13-10; San Diego
was a winner against Detroit 28-23;
and the Dallas Cowboys won a
divisional contest against the St.
Louis Cardinals 30-17.
Golf
Jan Stephenson sank five birdies
in the final round and claimed her
third victory of the year at the
54-hole LPGA Classic in Suffolk,
Virginia. Stephenson registered
a five-under-par 68 Sunday to total
14-under-par 205. Three strokes
back were Sally Little, who set a
course record with a third-round
eight-under-par 65, and Janet Alex.
Beth Daniel and Amy Alcott tied for
third with nine-under-210s, five
strokes behind Stephenson.

Jack Renner took the second win
of his career Sunday, beating out
Scott Simpson by two shots at the
PGA Pleasant Valley Classic in
Sutton, Massachusetts. Renner regis-
tered his last bogey early in the
second round, then played 52
straight holes of steady par-or-un-
der golf to claim the $54,000 prize
jith a total 11-under-par 273. Tom
Kite was third at 27 6, three shots
off Renner's pace. Gary Trivisonno
was fourth at 277.
