Included in the artifacts discovered a-
mong the wreckage, were cracker jack uni-
forms, a dog tag, and two 50 caliber
machine guns.
With all of the wreckage examined as
thoroughly as possible, Lt. Hinman signalled
the search completed as the winds were grow-
ing fierce and fear of a safe departure?be*
came apparent. He and SKI Favor prepared
to dispose of the ordnance while the others
undertook the chore of carrying the machine
guns down the dangerous glacier to the helo.
As Favor completed the wrapping of ex-
plosive charges around the ancient ordnance,
the area was cleared and the detonation
timer set for ten minutes, to allow every-
one time to reach the safety of the
glacier bottom. A whistle shrilled indi-
cating one minute until detonation. The
blast went off on schedule sending chunks
of ice careening through the air. The ex-
plosion echoed from mountain to mountain
in a thunderous orchestra and soon, all
was quiet again.
With the charges safely checked for
proper detonation the E0D team began the
treacherous trek to the Jolly Green Giant
preparing for takeoff from its moss car-
peted landing pad.
The flight back to the Keflavik Naval
Station passed quickly as warmth and dry-
ness replaced the damp chill in each
man's body while they sat quietly, think-
ing proudly of a job well done.
