Naval Aviation history The Chief of Naval Operations, ADM James D. Watkins, has announced that 1982 was the Department of the Navy's safest aviation year in history. Last year's major accident rate was 4.4 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours -- the lowest ever recorded. This record performance bettered the stated goal for 1982 of no more than 4.7 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours. During this _____________________ Corps pilots log- the period, Navy and Marine ged more than 2 million flight hours, highest ever since 1977. "Every man and woman in the Naval Avia- tion community can take great pride in this outstanding achievement," Admiral Watkins said. On the local scene Patrol Squadron Ten recently passed the 65,000 accident-free flight-hour mark. The NAS Brunswick-based squadron hasn't had an accident since March 1973. In the short time VP-10 has been deployed here they have accumulated more than 1,350 accident-free flight hours. Navy air traffic controllers here con- ducted more than 3,000 radar approaches in 1982. There were several minor aircraft mishaps in 1982, but no loss of life oc- curred as a result of the NATO Base air operations. The overall 1982 Navy figures reflect a 10 percent decrease from the previous year's record low in the number of major accidents. The number of fatalities drop- ped to 74 and aircraft losses for the year were the lowest on record. Various factors contributed to last year's landmark figures. "Improvement in the safety record over the past two years is the direct result of a revamped safety program," said VADM Robert F. Schoultz, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air Warfare. "In 1980 we changed the scope of the program from being reactionary to an- ticipatory. One of the changes improved of potential hazards so that they could be the loss of 1ife or ex- VADM Schultz said. The Navy's safety effort had a signifi- cant boost from the Naval Reserve Forces, which recorded only one mishap for the year, and from the Naval Air Systems Com- mand activities, which completed the year without a single major mishap. The Navy's the identification prior to a mishap corrected without pensive aircraft," best improvement was in the area of em- barked carrier operations, with a reduc- tion of 10 mishaps over the last year. "No one factor can be singled out as the reason this improvement occurred," says VADM Schultz, "but we have been fo- cusing on the landing signal officer, who is a critical element in the control of landing an airplane on a carrier flight deck. To this end we have been examining their responsibilities ing their training and The Marine Corps, of Naval Aviation contributed to this overall success, reducing their numbers of major mishaps by 10 from 1981 figures. ADM Watkins called for further efforts to continue the reduction in aviation mis- haps. "With the strength of past record- breaking efforts we have the momentum es- tablished to strive for further life, air- craft and dollar savings in 1983," he said. "Although it will be difficult, our goal is to continue bettering past rec- ords." as well as upgrad- equipment." as an integral part “Extinct?!!
