LDO/CWO programs
undergo changes
The Navy has completed a study of the
limited duty officer (LD0) and chief war-
rant officer (CW0) billet structures and is
incorporating recommendations resulting from
that study into a five-year program.
All LD0 billets were reviewed with chan-
ges recommended for 1,663 billets -- either
converting current unrestricted line, re-
stricted line or staff officer billets to
LD0 billets or vice versa. The net result
of these changes will be an increase of 532
LD0 billets -- 230 sea billets and 302
ashore. In addition, the number of LD0 com-
mander billets will increase from 88 to 241,
LD0 lieutenant commander billets will in-
crease from 710 to 957 and, overall, the
LD0 community will expand from 3,800 to
4,700.
Revisions to the CW0 program will in-
crease that community from 3,100 to 3,400
members and will put chief warrant officers
in officer-in-charge billets at a number of
shore activities.
These changes are expected to improve
sea-shore rotation in most fields and will
establish career patterns for all LD0 and
CW0 designators. The changes are not ex-
pected to ease selection for LD0 or CW0 as
the current level of accessions will accom-
modate planned growth in both communities.
These revisions, already underway, will af-
fect all LD0 and CW0 communities.

Hofn Run, from 1
and dropped off the second runner. After
35 minutes the baton was passed to the sec-
ond runner and the bus advanced another
five miles. This became the grueling rou-
tine for the next 49 hours.
The scenery was spectacular... the run-
ners were blessed with the sight of glac-
iers, rivers, waterfalls and wildlife along
the way. All felt this in itself made the
effort worthwhile.
Tired, cold and wet, the group arrived
in Hangar 885 at 11 a.m. on July 4... the
winds and the distance had taken their
toll... at this point each runner had only
one thought in mind... sleep!
The runners included Ralph Stewart,
N0CF; Donn LeValley, AIMD; Mark Mergard,
AIMD; Paul Riede, IDF; Allen Child, Rock-
ville; Lance Castle, 960th AWACS; Tom Cooke,
Hofn; Steve Knutson, Hofn; and Melvin Ray-
mond, William Holt, Daniel Dollar and Mike
Howard, all from the Marine Barracks. Our
lone civilian runner was Norma LeValley.
The adventure would not have been pos-
sible without the generous support of Gun-
nar Gunnarson and Todd Swenson, our faith-
ful bus drivers. A special note of thanks
also goes to Ron Vega, the mechanic on duty
at Hofn who fixed our flat tires.
pest control.. Beginning Monday, July 25, the
gym floor will be secured while painting of
the ceiling is accomplished.
According to Larry Hinson there will be
a gold tournament with the Ness Golf Club
on Saturday, August 6, at 1 p.m. Anyone
interested in playing should sign up at the
base gym not later than August 3. You can
contact Larry, Ext. 7243 or 7727, for addi-
tional info. Larry is also the person to
talk to if you're interested in playing on
the Guys and Dolls Thursday Night Mixed
League for the winter season.
