NBS earns CHINFO Merit Awards Story by J01 Raul Beanes inside white falcon —777 3 Military Air Fares..............5 3 Sports..........................8 The Navy-Broadcasting Service, Keflavik Detach- ment, has garnered three merit awards from the Navy's Chief of Information (CHINFO). The locally produced afternoon news program, News Four, won first place in the single televi- sion newscast division; USO radio spots produced by the detachment also placed first in the radio spot production division; and a special radio program by J01 Gary Bennett, "Tribute to a Star," earned second place in its category. Bennett, who was the anchorman for News Four, has recently been transferred from Iceland. Providing the best in news, information and entertainment for the Naval Station has been the slogan of NBS and this recognition of the quality of their work by CHINFO signals their success. The CHINFO-Merit Awards are designed to encour- age quality in broadcast and print media within the Navy. The winners are automatically entered in the Thomas Jefferson Award competition sponsor- ed by the Defense Information School on behalf of the Department of Defense. Winners of this com- petition are the best communication media in the United States military services. JOC Ron Hester, station manager, when asked how he felt about these awards said, "It is an honor, especially when you realize that we had over 700 competitors; that we are a relatively small unit; and that we are the only two-channel military operation in the world. I'm extremely proud of these folks." The chief explained that being a two-channel operation means that his people have twice as much work to do as a one- channel operation. The results were announced in a CHINFO message, letters and certificates for winning entries will be forwarded in November. Please see NBS photo on pg. 4
