Absentee votes will count despite mailing delays
The Department of Defense has learned that
some states are experiencing delays in forward-
ing absentee ballots for the General Election.
Wherever these delays have occured, action is
underway by the DOD Federal Voting Assistance
Office, working in conjunction with the U.S. De-
partment of Justice, to ensure that absentee
ballots are mailed to voters as soon as possi-
ble.
Commanders will promulgate following guidance
throughout their areas of responsibility: some
voters planning to vote by absentee ballot in
the Nov. 6 General Election may not receive
their ballots in time to vote and return the
completed ballot to their voting precincts by
the required date. All voters are urged to cast
their ballots and return them regardless of the
date the absentee ballot is received. If absen-
tee voters have reason to believe that they re-
ceived their ballot too late to meet the dead-
line, they should, in addition to voting and re-
turning the ballot promptly, notify their unit
voting officer or the Federal Votinq Assistance
Program Officer, Rm. 18457, Pentagon, Washing-
ton, D.C., 20309. The following information
should be provided: name, ssn, voting address,
voting location (precinct, county, city, state),
and, if available, the following three dates (1)
when ballot was requested (2) when the ballot
was received (3) when completed ballot was mail-
ed to voting jurisdiction. Reports of this nat-
ure will enable DOD Voting Officials to conduct
follow-up investigations and other actions if
warranted. In view of the delays some states
and local jurisdictions have experienced in mail
ing absentee ballots, APO and FPO authorities
have requested to hand cancel ballots being re-

Mrs. Bonnie Monrey—
My husband's in the
