in Iceland
Icelandic evenings
The restaurant Naust is one of the oldest
restaurants in Reykjavik featuring nautical
decor and traditional cuisine. Located near
the intersection of Vesturgata and Garda-
straeti it is open every day from 11:30 a.m.
and 11:30 p.m.; on weekends from 11:30 a.m.
until 2:30 a.m.
Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays
until August 18th the Naust is presenting
An Icelandic Evening with Icelandic seafood,
a special folklore program and a fashion
show. While you're being served your Sea-
food Special, folk singers with sing tradi-
tional songs, tell ghost stories and tales
of elves and fairies.
Pony trekking
There are many places to try Icelandic
pony trekking but one of the closest is in
Sangerdi just 20 minutes from Keflavik.
Ponies can be rented for $10 an hour, in-
struction is available and a riding school
is being conducted during July. To inquire
call 9-7768.
Boat show
The Arbaejar Museum has a show of Boats
from Greenland. The exhibit was provided by
the National Museum in Nuuk. It can be seen
daily, except Mondays, from 1:30 p.m. until
6 p.m.
Facts about Iceland
Alphabet - In the Icelandic alphabet are
several letters new to English speakers.
E>-]? is pronounced like th in think. B-6,
like th in the. £-&, like i. O-o, say e
with the mouth shaped for o. Double LL-11
sounds like tl. Ei-ei, like ei in rein.
Religion - The national religion is
Evangelical Lutheranism. Services are us-
ually on Sundays at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. There
are other religious services in Iceland,
however, Catholic mass is celebrated on
weekdays at 6 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and
Sundays at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. and later at
2 p.m.
Reykjavik Museum
These are restored farmhouses typical of those
huilt in Iceland during the last century. They
have been restored at Arbaer, an indoor/outdoor
museum area in Reykjavik. According to Fridthor
Eydal, Assistant Public Affairs Officer, there
are only a handful of these rock-and-sod buildings
left in Iceland.
