NATO Base Fire Fighters wins Scandinavian soccer title
A 13-member Keflavik Fire Fighter's Union soc-
cer team from the NATO Base recently claimed vic-
tory at a tournament they had been unable to win
for the past seven years when they were crowned
the champion of a five-nation Scandinavian soccer
meet August 15-16, in Oslo, Norway.
The tournament was comprised of soccer teams
from Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Iceland and Norway.
All the teams were members of airport fire fight-
er units. Iceland beat the team from Finland in
the final match 3-2. Iceland scored seven goals
during the tournament, with Georg Arnar borsteins-
son accounting for three, Gudnundur Armannsson
two, Fro6i Jonsson and Karl Sanders one goal each.
When asked if they were surprised over their
win, a spokesman for the team, Stefan Bjarkason,
stated that they were not really surprised because
they worked very hard to get ready for this year's
competition.
"We felt that if we ever had a chance of win-
ning, it would be this year because we had one of
the strongest teams we've ever had," he said.
"There was also a lot of pride involved in this
team because of unfavorable showings in the past."
The Keflavik fire fighters began forming their
team only two months prior to the tournament.
Because the work in shifts, the first time the
entire team played together was in the Oslo tour-
nament.
According to Bjarkarson, airport fire fighters
must maintain a high state of physical fitness.
Playing soccer only enhanced months of physical
conditioning.
"We didn't have a lot of time to practice arid
get into shape but most of the fire fighters are
always in good condition anyway, so all we had to
really concentrate on was being able to play as a
team," explained Bjarkarson. "Apparently it was
enough time because we won over some very good
teams."
Transportation to and from the tournament was
provided by Icelandair, at discounted fares for
the players. Team members also donated off-duty
hours to work for local merchants in exchange for
contributions for the trip. They painted, made
minor repairs and performed other chores in ex-
change for contributions to cover their expenses
during the trip.
Bjarkason also acknowledged the Keflavik Fire
Chief Sveinn Eiriksson, who granted them time to
attend the Scandinavian tournament. They also
wished to thank all of the Keflavik fire fighters
who remained behind who had to adjust their work-
shifts to fill-in for them during their absence.
In November representatives from all of the
Scandinavian countries involved in the soccer
tournament will visit Iceland to discuss the
future of sporting competition between union fire
fighters.
