In and about Iceland
By JOC John Petersen
Here's an Icelandic tra-
vel tip I'm almost reluctant
to share. Hveragerdi
(Kver-a-gerthi) the green-
house village just over the
mountain from Reykjavik,
is a great place to visit on
summer weekends. It can
be done cheaply or at some
expense.
Only an hour and a half from the NATO Base via
Reykjavik on the Ring Road, Hveragerdi is a small
town huddled at the foot of a mountain which protects
it from northerly and westerly winds. There are
geothermal springs in the area that heat the
greenhouses. These remarkable glass structures
can be visted and it's worth a look to see tomatoes,
peppers, and cucumbers basking in the 80 degree
heat — they're also a good place to get warm!
There's an amusement park called Tivoli; it's no
Disneyland but good fun on a smaller scale. Rides
are a little expensive, either 70 or HO kronur (about
$2-4). It opens at 2 p.m. during the week and at
noon on weekends.
Across the street from Tivoli is a souvenir
/greenhouse/restaurant/candy shop called Eden, it's
easily identified by the stained glass depictions of the
first members of the human race guarding the
entrance. It too is expensive but warm and pleasant.
Parts of the store accept credit cards (by the way,
you can use a VISA card at Tivoli) but all sections
accept kronur checks and, of course, Icelandic
cash.
One of the facts of living in Iceland I have
discovered in my summer travels is that Icelandic
gasoline stations don't accept credit cards. They
will take checks written on kronur accounts.
(Remember that you can't spend American cash off
base!)
If you choose to spend the night in Hveragerdi
there are three choices of accommodations: (1)
camping, (2) a small hotel that also ha^ a Youth
Hostel near, or (3) a brand new hotel that judt
opened June 28.
