s G H O U S E H O L D IPPING YOUR ODS A handy guide to help you move to and from Iceland By JOl(AW) Jodelle Blankenship The following information has been com- piled to assist those who are preparing to ship their personal property, including a house- hold goods shipment and an unaccompanied or express baggage shipment. Entitlements In connection with permanent change-of- station orders from Keflavfk, each military member is authorized, within their prescribed weight allowance (see chart on page 3), the following: * Ship all or a portion of the household goods at one time to the new duty station, or * Ship from a former permanent duty sta- tion to the new duty station, or * Ship from a previously designated place to the new duty station, or * Ship from non-temporary storage to the new duty station, or * The continuance of non-temporary storage to the new duty station, or * Ship express items via an expedited mode of travel. The Household Goods office normally sees 35 to 50 customers weekly. They have three counselors for packout interviews and are open for appointments Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. You must call 4618 to schedule an appoint- ment after receipt of orders. When appointments are made, there is ap- proximately a one- to two-week period be- tween scheduling and the appointment. One important thing for customers to remember is that their preparation will make the appoint- ment system work for everyone. Requirements/Recommendations for Packout Here are some important things to remem- ber when preparing for a packout. * Immediately upon receipt of PCS orders, schedule a packout appointment. * Be organized when you come for a pack- out appointment by bringing nine copies of your orders for each shipment. If you have a household goods shipment and an express shipment, you will need 18 copies of your or- ders. If you have storage in the states, an ad- ditional nine copies of your orders are re- quired. * Know what packout dates you would like and have an alternate date in mind. Make sure the packout dates you choose during your appointment are firm ones. Once estab- lished, packout dates cannot be changed ex- cept in an emergency. * It is also helpful to have an estimate of the weight you will be shipping. A realistic esti- mate can be obtained by allowing !,000 pounds per room or, if you have the inven- tory of your move to Iceland and have not purchased much since then, use that weight. Customs When submitting your application for ship- ment at government expense, you will be ask- ed to make an appointment with the Navy Se- curity Customs Office, located in Bldg. 810, ext. 2796. Customs Office personnel will have you fill out a Customs Declaration DD Form 1252 for shipment. They will also schedule an appointment for a customs and pre-customs inspection to be conducted by a qualified Military Customs Inspector (MCI). The pre- customs inspection will be made for five days prior to your packout and a MCI will come to your residence and talk about what items you will be shipping. The MCI will perform the actual customs inspection during your pack- out. Boxes should not be taped by the ship- pers prior to the MCI inspection. It is your responsibility to ensure nothing is sealed un- til the MCI arrives. Plan ahead and know what you can and cannot ship back to the U. S. or other overseas locations (see story on page 3).
