Filing a
damage claim
Personnel are responsible for
accurately completing their
household goods loss or damage
claim within 70 days of receipt of
their shipment. Failure to do so
may result in a substantial reduc-
tion of the amount of money you
may otherwise have recovered.
Here are some helpful hints in fil-
ing your claim.
Upon delivery of either house-
hold goods or unaccompanied
baggage, the carrier should pro-
vide a DD Form 1840/1840R (a
two-sided pink form) used to doc-
ument missing or damaged
household goods items.
Persons receiving their ship-
ments should complete Section B
of the DD Form 1840. This form is
designed to ensure that the per-
son receiving their shipment has:
1. Noted the inventory number
in Column (a);
2. Noted the name of the item in
Column (b);
3. Noted in Column (c) the de-
scription of loss or damage to the
item. If any item is "Lost" from
the shipment, indicate in Column
(c) that the item is "Missing."
If there is insufficient space to
document all loss or damage, use
a continuation page, which has
been marked as continuation of
the DD Form 1840.
A duplicate continuation page
must be made; one copy will be
given to the carrier, and one copy
should be maintained by the rep-
resentative receiving the ship-
ment. Continue to follow the

Make arrangements for your
inbound goods
If you are expecting a household
goods shipment to arrive in Iceland, you
should contact the Household Goods
Inbound Section at 4608/4609 as soon as
possible after your arrival. It is impor-
tant that you provide the Inbound
Section staff with your home and work
phone numbers so they can contact you
as soon as your shipment arrives on
island.
Normal transit times from date of
pick-up from the United States are 55 to
65 days for household goods, and four
to five weeks for baggage shipments.
From another overseas location, the
transit time for household goods varies.
Shipment deliveries in Iceland are
made during the following hours:
Monday through Thursday — 8:30
a.m. until 4 p.m. and
Friday — 8:30 a.m. until noon.
At the time of delivery the person re-
ceiving the household goods or baggage
shipment is required to:
* Have a designated representative at
home.
* Obtain DD Form 1840/1840R from
the carrier. If the carrier does not have a
DD Form 1840/1840R, contact the
Transportation Office at 7998 and re-
quest that a DD Form 1840/1840R be
delivered to you. NOTE: The DD Form
1840/1840R is used to document miss-
upon arriving^
ing or damaged household goods items^^^
* Check each carton or item off on the
inventory list to ensure that everything
that was picked up is delivered.
* Ensure that the carrier notes any loss
or damage which may have occurred
during the move.
* It is not advisable to plug in any
electronic components such as stereos,
television sets, etc. until 24 hours after
delivery. The presence of moisture
which may have accumulated during
shipping may cause damage to elec-
tronic components.
The carrier's responsibilities at the
time of delivery include:
* Providing a DD Form 1840/1840R.
* Unpacking and unwrapping all car-
tons, boxes and crates.
* Placing each item or carton in the
room you indicate.
* Reassembling all furniture and
equipment disassembled at origin.
* Removing all packing materials.
Extra boxes can be broken down and
thrown in the nearest dumpster or
can call the packers and they will pick^^^
them up.
* Making a written record of any loss
or damages.
If any problems arise, or if you have
any questions, call the Transportation
Manager at 7998. □
