ASWOC earns the acoustic analyst excellence award
Story by Colleen C. Casper
Commander, Fleet Air Keflavik’s (CFK) Anti-submarine Warfare
Operations Center (ASWOC) was recently selected for the Atlantic and
Mediterranean Area Acoustic Analysis Excellence Award. The award
is presented annually to the command that is the most proficient at
classifying and identifying submarines. The analysis department
earned the award competing against seven other U. S. Navy commands
throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean areas.
Training teams visit all ASWOC commands twice a year to admini-
ster a five-day training course before the test is given to determine
which analysts are the most proficient. The results place all ASWOC
commands in a world-wide competitive cycle.
“The people are tested in specific areas. The raw score is the average
of those areas. We came out on top, with 93 percent. One of our
workers, AWl(AW) Jesse Brooks, placed first out of all the personnel
in the ASWOCs that competed,” AWC Charles Jensen, CFK’s analysis
chief explained.
LT Douglas Clark, CFK analysis division officer, accepted the award
for his department. “I want to thank my department for their hard work
and thank the AWs from Mission Control and Evaluation Division as
a group. People who are not directly involved in this program were
standing watches so my people could attend the training classes. It was
a team effort and everyone had to want to earn this privilege. This award
is just recognition of what I’ve always believed, that my departme^M
number one,” he said. “My department had the professional des
be achievers. We would not have been able to receive this a'^J
without that attitude. The skills needed to excel in this competition are
perishable. My department had that deep-down desire and worked
hard.”
The personnel who were tested found the examination to be challeng-
ing. “I studied for weeks on end and there is a good probability that you
can be tested on any kind of submarine or surface ship. They can really
ask you anything, you have to be prepared for all angles,” said
AWl(AW) Jesse Brooks, the leading petty officer for the analysis
division. “I trained hard, studied and put in extra time while the training
team was here. This is the first time that this command has won the
award and we are proud of it.”
AW1 Gary Stiegman, special projects team leader, had received the
award at his last command in the Azores and was a trainer was well as
a participant in this exam. “As a trainer we decided what training needs
our division required prior to the cycle. We capitalized on our strengths
and built up on the weaknesses,’’herelated. As far as winning the award
for the second time he felt, “It is great the first time around and even
better the second time. It is an absolute team effort and it could not have
been accomplished without all parties working together.”
CAPT James I. Munslerman, Commanding Officer, Naval Air Station,
recently signed a proclamation proclaiming the second Saturday of
each June as Arbor Day. He encouraged all members of the community
to participate in base beautification efforts. “Helping this cause gives
people a sense of hope for making the base environment better," CAPT
Munsterman said. The Base Beautification committee will meet April
28 at 1:30 p.m. in the AFI conference room. For more information call
