A P-3 Orion aircraft assigned to VP 5 was re-
cently part of an extensive multi-national search
for a missing person who was on a single-
handed, trans-Atlantic voyage from New York
to France. The capsized Coyote, with no ap-
parent damage to the hull, was finally located
last week with no signs of its skipper, Michael
Plant of Minneapolis.
When last heard from on Oct. 21, Plant re-
quested that a message be sent to his fiance in
France that he had lost all electrical power but
was continuing on his voyage.
An initial six day search by the U.S. Coast
Guard and Navy and Canadian Coast Guard
was suspended, however, the search resumed
Nov. 20, when two U.S. Coast Guard C-130s,
one British Nimrod, one French Atlantique
and one Navy P-3 Orion searched an area north
of the Azores.
Divers brought to the scene, found the life
raft still tied to the deck of the boat. The search
for Plant was called off at this point.

‘Tis the season to be jolly and generous and
to ensure that base residents have a fun season
of gift giving and festivities, there are a few
local custom regulations to remember.
Gift giving to our host nationals is allowed
but gifts may only be taken off base during
appropriate gift giving occasions, according to
the customs regulations for personnel of the
Iceland Defense Force. Gifts may not exceed
$12, must be unwrapped, and receipts for the
gift should readily be available. Keep in mind,
the limit for gift giving is 24 gifts a year.
“The procedures are simple,” according to
Maj. Phillip W. Homing, Iceland Defense
Force Provost Marshal. “Gifts must be de-
clared to Icelandic officials at the gate when
leaving base. The driver should pull over to the
right ‘to declare’ lane and contact the customs
officer. At this point the officer will mark off
a sqaure on your ration card undo the specials
section.” He continued, “gifts should never be
in their original wrapping.”
TSgt Kyle Wright, Town Patrolman further
explained that “all gifts should be declared, ex-
[t for gifts which are Icelandic products,
» as flowers, dairy products, and woolen
Controlled items (alcohol and tobacco
products) are not authorized gift items at any
time of the year.
“The biggest problem we continue to have is
that people do not pull off to the right and
declare their items,” Wright said.

Celebrating at this time of year may also
involve bringing Icelandic friends on base.
FC1 Paul P. Kimbro, Watch Commander, Navy
Security said, “The procedures for bringing
Icelandic friends on base are relatively simple.
To bring one person onto the base, you must
meet the individual at the gate and sign him/her
on. As the sponsor you should stay with your
guest and you are responsible for signing out
your guest when they leave the base.

Editor's Note: A recent edition of Navy
Broadcasting Service Del., Keflavlk's Feed-
back featured CAPT James Judan, Command-
ing Officer Navy Exchange (NEX), Center,
Norfolk. The following is an interview The
White Falcon conducted with UZDR Randall
D. Nelson, Officer in Charge, Navy Exchange
Keflavlk to explain NEX policies which CAPT
Judan mentioned during the television show.
Question: What is the NEX policy on
catalog price comparisons?
Answer: CAPT Judan brought up an ongo-
ing policy of the NEX which was not widely
publicized. The policy is that the NEX, will
meet or beat any other store or catalog prices.
The Navy Exchange management feels pretty
Icelanders on base we require that a duplicate
list of all their names and addresses be submit-
ted in a typed memo to the Navy Security Chief
at least 48 hours in advance of the visit”
Kimbro said. One copy will be sent to the
Icelandic Police and be made available to the
gate guards to be used as the guests arrive. If
you have any further questions contact the
Chief of Police at ext 4381 or read more about
the procedures in COMICDEFORINSTs
1710.1 and 5840.5E.

confident is stating something like this be-
cause they are checking and comparing prices
all the time.
Question: How are the NEX prices estab-
lished?
Answer: Our prices are established by the
buyers in Jacksonville, Fla. They continually
check prices with Walmart and K-Mart
You will see a trend that our products will be
priced exactly the same as Toys-R-Us, K-
Mart and Walmart. K-Mart and Walmart may
be getting a better deal on their merchandise
because they are buying greater quantities but
we are working on a smaller profit marign to
match those prices.
Question: Are there any restrictions or
guidelines to this price camparsion policy?
