Celebrating Black History Month on the cour
By J02 Carlos Bongioanni
The Black History Month Committee
(BHMC) sponsored its second five on five
basketball tournament, slam-dunk competi-
tion and three-point shoot off last weekend.
Five teams competed in the two-day, double
elimination tournament, playing a total of
eight games. The Express went undefeated,
winning three straight games to coast to the
number one spot.
Second place went to the Hit Squad who
were able to down the Tar Heels and Unified,
but couldn ’ t get past the Express. In their first
match-up, the Hit Squad stayed close to the
Express losing by only three points. How-
ever, the Express crushed them, 40-25, in the
championship game.
The Hoopsters were eliminated from com-
petition early (with limited hoop action) after
losing their first two games. Unified played
three games before bowing out, while the Tar
Heels battled back, after a first-round loss,
only to lose again in the semi-finals.
An added highlight to the weekend’s events
was the slam dunk competition. Each con-
testant got five chances to display his most
impressive dunk. A panel of five judges rated
each dunk on a scale of five to 10. When it
was all over, they unanimously selected Maz6
Toomer as the best dunk artist.
Rounding out the basketball weekend, 12
players competed in the three-point competi-
tion. In taking top honors, Pete Baldwin
showcased his talent for accuracy by sinking
11 of 15 long distance jump shots.
Commenting on the tournament, Frank
Ellis, Jr., BHMC tournament coordinator,
said, “Blacks have had a major impact in
sports. This is just another way to celebrate
that fact during Black History Month. We’re
concentrating on the athletic side this week-
end.”
According to Ellis, the BHMC has other
events planned for the month of February. A
trivia game for eighth through 12th graders
will be held at the A.T. Mahan multi-purpose
room, Wednesday at 6 p.m. Teams are ah_
ready formed. Anybody interested in wa
ing is invited to attend.

Chris Moore, no. 54, and John Rhodes, no.
55, try to contain no. 6, Joe Wright, in
Sunday’s scrimmage game against Breida-
blik. The NATO men's team led for much of
the first half and early part of the second half,
but eventually succumbed to Wright's con-
stant attack. Wright scored 51 points to lead
Breidablik past NATO 106 to 98. Two tech-
nical fouls against NATO in the closing mo-
ments of the game clenched the win for Breida-
blik. The NATO men's team is currently pre-
paring for the Northern Europe (NOREUR)
Basketball Tournament to be held in Brawdy,
Wales, Feb. 25-28. Coach Frank Ellis, Jr.,
says this year’s team looks stronger than last
year's team which took third place in the
1992 NOREUR tournament. (Photo by J02
