Base sports Just for kicks! Story and photo by J03 (SW) Andreas Walter The snow has left and the driving rain is all but gone. Or so we wish. Yet these condi- tions do not deter the growing number of players on A.T. Mahan’s Junior Varsity and Varsity soccer teams. “The players can be found on the practice field in all sorts of weather conditions,” said David A. Nojaim, teacher at the A.T. Mahan High School, and coach of the soccer teams. “We hope to start construction on a new soccer field, complete with lights and score- board, by the beginning of the summer,” he added. During a recent practice session, with gusts of wind and intermittant rain, more than 30 students were on the field, dribbling, passing and lining up shot after shot at the goal. The players rotated through the position of goal- tender. keeping everyone on their feet and honing their skills. According to Nojaim, the players prac- tice as much as possible, taking into account the ve- ather. The Junior Varsity team is intended for stu- dents ages 13 through 15, and the Varsity is for ages 15 through 17. The teams start practicing at the be- ginning of school in fall, and resume the spring ses- sion in March. “We play against local Icelandic teams in the springtime, and host the Friendship Cup tourna- ment in the fall,” Nojaim said. Walleyball tournament hits well with command teams Story and photo by J02 Carlos Bongioanni Brent Van-Polen (right) adds some high-powered punch to his spike at a match between NCTS and CFK during last week’s walleyball tournament. According to MWR Athletic Coordinator, Thomas Kubalewski, the tournament was a great success. “Walleyball is a fairly new sport on this base. Having 10 command-sponsored teams compete in the event, showed a high degree of concentrated efforts by indi- vidual commands. In addition, it was a good tourna- ment to have just before the start of the volleyball season, because it gave everybody another opportu- nity to improve their skills.” Walleyball is a cross between volleyball and rac- quetball. The same concepts of volleyball apply, but the teams are confined to the small area of a racquetball court. “The challenge of the sport is playing the ball off the walls,” said Kubalewski. CFK dominated the double-elimination tournament and came away with first prize. Second place went to 4557th TSF.
