Twenty-four command-sponsored teams
took part in the MCI/MWR Pre-season soft-
ball tournament held at Naval Air Station,
Keflavlk, May 28-31. Only one team, the 35
Supply Cards, was left undefeated after four
days of competition. In their first three con-
tests, the Cards outscored their opponents by
a whopping 54 to six margin. The competi-
tion was tougher in the championship game,
though, as the 56th Rescue team provided
some stiff resistance to the Card's champion-
ship drive. Generating a rally late in the
game, the Cards were able to clinch a win by
a relatively narrow margin of 9-6. (Photo by

Co-ed teams battle for top position
as volleyball season wraps up

The top three teams from both the Skoda and Lada co-ed volleyball leagues spent
a large portion of their Memorial Day weekend digging, setting and spiking. But, for
all their effort, there wasn’t any team that could outdo team CFK.
The players of CFK came away as victors, but they had to fight off a very determined
4557th Supply to come away with the title. Competition became particularly intense
during the championship round as the two finalists faced off for nearly four hours.
“It wasn’t a volleyball game,” said CFK’s coach, George Jarvis. “Normally, I enjoy
playing a ‘game’ of volleyball, but what we had was a volleyball war. We had to really
fight to win it.”
CFK had defeated Supply in the second round of the double-elimination tournament,
but Supply won four matches in the loser’s bracket to meet CFK again. In their first
match of the championship round, Supply won the best of five series and forced the
tournament to go another round.
CFK won the first two games of the final match, before losing the third game to
Supply. However, Supply ran out of steam in the fourth game and finally bowed to the
persistant attack of CFK.
“They won the first match because of pure determination,” said Jarvis. I think we
won in the end because of our fundamentals and because of our depth. We were able
to substitute more and keep our legs fresh.”
The 4557th plays against the High School team.
