Why is security MY job?
By TSgt Charles Matthews
35th Security Police Squadron
Each person in the Air Force is tasked with
performing a given specialty and a multitude
of tasks. Although each career field is differ-
ent, all Air Force members are part of the sup-
porting force to Security Police (SP).
Those who work in restricted areas support
the SPs by applying internal controls through
vigilance (not leaving their aircraft or other
priority resources unattended, etc.) Those
working outside restricted areas provide
support by remaining alert and reporting
suspicious activities.
The Air Force Physical Security Program
is designed to deter espionage and hostile ac-
tivity directed against Air Force priority re-
sources. However, security is not infallible;
operational requirements and the need to
moderate manpower and material costs dic-
tate prudence in achieving a balance between
security and a necessary degree of risk.
Increasing costs for manpower and mate-
rial, coupled with a shrinking budget are
going to reduce the number of security per-
sonnel on flight lines throughout the Air
Force. Over the last three years, the SP career
field has decreased by 30 percent. This is
going to require an even larger commitment
to security by those who own and operate our
restricted areas. Air Force policy requires all
Air Force members to shoulder their share of
security responsibilities along with the secu-
rity forces.
Our operational commitment dictates a
high degree of readiness for our aircraft. We
can ill afford to lose even one aircraft due to
a random act of sabotage. Over the last
several years, the Air Force has lost several
aircraft, and others have been damaged. The
common denominator has been the attitude,
“It won’t happen at this base.”
Air Force Regulation 207-1, the Air Force
Physical Security Program, mandates a secu-
rity education program for all Air Force per-
sonnel. To further that, the 35th Wing has
appointed a Flight Line Constable to serve as
an advisor and focal point for all security
matters related to the Air Force in Iceland.
