Northern Viking descends upon Iceland
The troops have arrived, the
helicopters unloaded and as-
sembled and base personnel have
readied themselves for the sixth,
biennial command post and Held
training exercise.
The exercise is expected to in-
clude more than 2,900 base mili-
tary members, as well as 850
Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast
Guard off-island personnel.
During the two-week exercise,
forces here will test the ability of
the Iceland Defense Force (IDF)
to defend various locations
around the island in a simulated
attack.
Northern Viking (NV) ‘93 has
been in the planning stages since
the conclusion of the previous
exercise in 1991. The goal for
this year’s NV was to expand the
scope of the exercise by increas-
ing the cooperation and coordi-
nation with the Government of
Iceland, while reducing the re-
sources used.
According to IDF Plans Offi-
cer Lt. Col. Charlie Parker, those
goals are being achieved in this
year’s exercise. See pages 4-7 for
more on Northern Viking.
