Elegy on departure of Sky One By Deborah Carnes SKY ONE is going on the 'tater. A friend is leaving but not for the States. Not for anywhere we know of; “Scrambled it will be,” declared the Fates. Will you e'er come back again, Ye good and trusted friend? Sorely, sadly, we will miss you, Winter’s long, and never ends. The Warrant tells us he is talking To powers that be, to bring you back. We know he’ll try, he’ll do his best — Without you, though, the future’s black. Star Trek, Star Trek, where are you? Scrambled signals, lost magician’s tricks. High above the Northern Lights, What will I do without my daily fix? September first, in Nineteen Ninety Three The fateful day when you will have to leave Too soon will come, and nothing can we do. Oh! fruitless plea, with no chance of reprieve. SKY ONE has gone, forever from our view. The fateful Midnight Hour came and went Your passing was not seen, or heard. Your time among us, surely, was well spent NAS Keflavik's unique Ombudsman Program By Jeannie Baldwin, Ombudsman Council Coordinator In October 1970, the Chief of Navy Opera- tions established the Ombudsman Program for the Navy. Many of you are probably wondering what is an Ombudsman. Om- budsmen are appointed by the commanding officer or officer-in-charge of a command/ unit to serve as a liaison between the com- mand and its family members. They receive formal training to equip them with the knowledge, skills and ability to cut through government red tape to resolve prob- lems. Their primary goal is assisting in rumor control and imto improve the quality of life for all military families. Currently, 22 commands have ombuds- men representing them in a volunteer capac- ity aboard Naval Air Station, Keflavik. The Ombudsman Program is unique, because it contains representatives from the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Having ombuds- men from various military branches here in Keflavik creates diversity among the coun- cil, and it also improves the communication process between the different military serv- ices. If you are experiencing problems and don’t know where to go for help or what to do next, please don’t hesitate to contact your ombudsman for guidance. It is the job of the ombudsman to seek out factual information pertaining to the complaints and to provide the complainant with a factual response to the problem. The complainant must first attempt to resolve the problem by utilizing the chan- nels already in existence prior to contacting the ombudsman. Many times, ombudsmen are contacted for advice on how to handle emergency leave situation, where to find financial counseling, etc. On behalf of the commanding Officer of NAS, Keflavik, and the Ombudsman Coun- cil Coordinator, I would like to thank all of the council members for their continued support of the program. It is through your work and dedication to helping others that the program continues to thrive.
