Runners stretch, shoot and take aim for fire safet 3 Story and photos by J03 (SW) Andreas Walter Hundreds of base personnel gathered on the Naval Air Station (NAS) Keflavflc Fire Department soccer field to participate in the 1993 Fire Prevention Fun Run. According to Haraldur Stefans son, NAS Fire Chief, the run was the first ever of its kind within the entire Navy. The run aimed to focus attention on fire safety issues and was a continuation of activi- ties put on by the fire department throughout the past week. Fire Department officials set up nearly forty large billboards and displays around the base depicting safety messages and important facts. In addition, Fire Department personnel held an “Exit Drill in the Home” and drove through the housing areas to see if residents evacuated their homes in a timely fashion. The start of the drill was broadcast on TV and radio to give residents proper notice. The Fun Run participants left the soccer field and circled around the water tower and the 56th Rescue Squadron Hangar. The route ended back at the Fire Dep; ment where participants received refre: ments. “Everybody was a winner,” declared Siggi Arason, Chief of Fire Prevention. Globetrotters make international trot to Keflavik By JG3 (SW) Andreas Walter Two of the world-famous Harlem Globe- trotters came to Naval Air Station Keflavik Tuesday and greeted base personnel at the re- cently opened Parcheezi’s/Cactus Cantina. The basketball team was in Iceland as part of their 1993 European Tour to play against their rivals, the Generals show team from Washington, D.C. According to Adam Clavering, TKO Ice- land tour promoter, “The Globetrotters offer a blend of showmanship, thrills, antics and slam dunks seen in top basketball action." The Globetrotters were in Iceland four years ago, but have recently come under new management and now play with a completely revamped line-up. Clavering says that the changes to the show have met with much more audience ap- proval. Clyde Sinclair of the Globetrotters autographs a basketball for a young fan. 8 The White Falcon
