Christmas shopping made convenient by the USO

Now that Thanksgiving is over, thoughts
turn toward Christmas and the hectic last-
minute shopping that cranes with it Being
stationed in Iceland, many of you may have
started, or already completed your shopping.
But for those of you who have put it off, you
don’t have to be limited to shopping on the
base or out of catalogs. The United Service
Organization (USO) offers shopping trips to
Rekjavfk and trips to the Rekjavfk Flea
Market.
The most recent USO shopping trip was on
Veteran’s Day. Stops included the Alafoss
wool outlet and Kringlan Mall. “It
was good to get to buy local gifts for
family and friends back home,” said
Elizabeth M. Riley, one of the five
people who went on the trip.
“The idea for the trip came when
Wavell Mead stopped in at my of-
fice,” said Debi A. Robinson, USO
assistant program director. Mead
had wanted to do some Christmas
shopping and asked if the USO could
put a trip together, Robinson
explained. “I’ll be more than
glad to set up a trip as long as
we can get five people to go.
I need a minimum of five to
get use of the USO van.”
“I would recommend other
people take the trip because
of the selection at Alafoss,” said Riley.
She added,“It was also nice to see the
Iceland countryside with snow and
not worry about the driving.”
The whole group agreed that not
having to worry about driving, get-
ting lost or parking were all definite
advantages. “It was great,”
exclaimed Mead. “I don’t
know my way around
(Rekjavfk) that well. The
best part was going with a
group of people and getting
to know them.”
Interest in the shopping
trips have increased as No-
vember draws to a close.
“Things are really starting to pick
up,” Robinson pointed out . “I’ve
had a lot of people stop by asking
when the next trip is. Just a reminder,
there are only 29 shopping days left.”
The next USO shopping trip is
scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 2. The van will
leave the USO at 9:30 a.m. and return tenta-
tively at 3 p.m. Van donations are usually
eight dollars, but are half price fra the month
of December. There is also a trip to the flea
market in Rekjavik on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Thrift Shop announces bargains for the month of December
For the coming holiday season, the base Thrift Shop is running a
series of specials in December. During December, Dollar Bag Days
will be replaced by the great sales below. Also, to give the Thrift Shop
volunteers an end-of-year vacation, the Thrift Shop will be closed
from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2. The Thrift Shop will reopen on Monday, Jan.
3 at 10 a.m.

The Thrift Shop volunteers wish to thank all patrons and donors

As a result of everyone’s efforts, more than $10,000 has been
contributed to the NAS Keflavfk community in the form of chari-
table contributions in 1993. We hope that this goodwill will con-
tinue in 1994.
