All stars provide stiff competition

They had heard all the horror stories before game tim^
“Last year, they killed us!” remarked one youngster who
witnessed firsthand the devastating loses from a year ago.
Thus, the American all-star soccer players from the Keflavfk
Youth Athletic Association (KYAA) came into last
weekend’s games against their Icelandic counterparts with
a sense of trepidation.
This year’s event, however, proved to be a different story.
After the first half, down by only two goals, the 7-9 year old
players realized they were just as capable of winning as their
opponents.
With a boost of confidence, the KYAA all-stars mounted
an aggressive attack early in the second half. Two quick
goals not only tied the game, but also awoke the Hafnarfjordur
visitors to the reality that they could lose.
Hafnarfjordur responded with two goals but found it in-
creasingly difficult to stave off the persistent KY AA all star
team which scored another goal late in the game. KYAA
missed tying the game when a shot went just a hair too high
and deflected off the goal post. KYAA lost 4-3.
The second game, played by 10-12 year olds, was equally
exciting. At one point in the first half, the American young-
sters actually led by a score of 2-1. In the closing moments
of the game, with the two teams tied 3-3, the Hafnarfjordur
team blitzed the KYAA goalie and scored the deciding
point, pulling out a 4-3 win. M

Indoor tournament is action-packed excitement

Even in the dead of winter, with fields
frozen and covered with snow, soccer is alive
and well at Naval Air Station Keflavik.
Last weekend’s double elimination indoor
soccer tournament, sponsored by MWR,
brought the excitement of an outdoor sport
into a small arena where the action never
ceased. The wooden-planked field of the
base gym was the turf where eight teams
battled for nearly eight hours last Saturday.
Although the Kef Contractors (KQ took
first place, their road to the top wasn’t easy.
After losing to NAS in the third round, 1-0,
KC dropped to the loser’s bracket and played
a semi-final match against the “A” Team to
decide who would go to the finals.
The “A” Team lost earlier to KC in the first
round of the tournament. Although they won
three successive games in the loser’s bracket,
they couldn’t hold off KC’s attack in their
second matchup losing by a score of 3-1.
In the final round, KC was able to squeak
past NAS in a close 3-2 contest, forcing the
the two teams to play one last time. KC
carried the momentum of their win into the
final game, defeating NAS by a 2-1 margin.
The other five teams that participated in
the tournament finished like this: The Blast
took fourth place, losing two and winning
two. Meteorology and High School “B”
were both eliminated in three games, while
MWR and High School “A” bowed out after
losing their first two games.
