John Markulis. Bryant relieves Haskins today in a change of command ceremony at 11 a.m. in Hangar 831. Story and photo by J02(AW) B. Natalie Dias Rear Adm. Stanley W. Bryant relieves Rear Adm. Michael D. Haskins as commander of the Iceland Defense Force (IDF) today in a change of command ceremony in Hangar 831 at 11 a.m. A Detroit native, Bryant’s most recent assign- ment was as the commanding officer of USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), homeported at Norfolk, Va. As the IDF commander, Bryant will assume the responsibility of approximately 3,000 military members from all four branches of the U.S. armed services and staff officers from Canada, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom. Also, as the IDF commander, Bryant will serve as the Commander, Fleet Air Keflavik; Commander, Iceland Anti-Submarine Warfare Group and Island Commander Iceland. Haskins and his wife Joanne will make their 18th move when they leave Iceland tomorrow for Norfolk. Not new to Haskins is the fact he’ll wear a dual hat in his new position. He will be the Commander of Patrol Wings, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Commander, Task Force EIGHT- FOUR. “If somebody were to ask me to describe Iceland in one sentence,” says Haskins, “I would have to say it is a land of cold climate and warm people.” Joanne adds, “It might not make much sense, but I’m not ready to leave Iceland, and at the same time I’m looking forward to going back to the United States.” “We’ll miss Adm. Haskins,” expresses Col. Richard B. Cross Jr., 35th wing commander. “He’s been a strong advocate of Air Force mem- bers stationed here, a great leader and friend.” Pick up next week’s White Falcon for coverage of the change of command ceremony.
