Quality of life not to suffer during Wing’s reorganization

Editor’s note: This is the final segment of a
Feedback transcript in which Col. Richard B. Cross
Jr., commander of the 85th Wing, fielded questions
pout the Air Force’s restructuring in Iceland. The
rts were presented by Cross during the program,
e first shows the wing’s current organization and
the second presents the wing’s organization once it
becomes a group in July 1995.
Q: How will this drawdown affect the quality of
life?
A: It shouldn’t really affect it. There is the possi-
bility of fewer people seeking employment and
that would lead to more opportunities for off-
duty employment. As far as the housing situation,
it should free many housing units up and I know
Capt. Robert Blake is considering doing some-
thing with the older housing on the base. In the
barracks, we’ve been wanting to give some resi-
dents their own rooms. They won’t have to dou-
ble up as much as they do now. Overall, I don’t
believe the drawdown will have a negative effect
on the quality of life.

Q: Will people with a 1996 DEROS (date eligible
for return from overseas) see their original
DEROS or will they leave early?
Each case is on an individual basis. If their
it is downsizing and that person wants to leave
rly, there may be a possibility that an individu-
al’s assignment can be curtailed. The important
factor is that everyone will get remote tour credit
(i.e. unaccompanied must serve 180 days and
accompanied must serve 365 days).
