The Reykjavík Grapevine Best of Reykjavík 2018 44 TRUST THE LOCALS Perfect Day How to Reykjavík, from those who know the city best Words: John Rogers Photos: Art Bicnick & Saga Síg Who knows how better to nav- igate a city than the locals? No- body, that’s who. With that in mind, we asked some faces of the local scene—a DJ, a rapper, and a comedian—to tell us about how they’d spend their perfect day in Reykjavík. Imagine that! No work (unless they’re weird and want to), no fitness guilt (although some people apparently enjoy working out, wtf), and no budget considerations (yay!). What a day. Here are some highlights from their dream itineraries. Silja Glømmi, DJ In the afternoon: “After brunch, all of us would go to a cat show hosted by Kattaræk- tarfélag Íslands. My friends and I are all dedicated cat lovers, and the perfect way to spend an afternoon is to adore cats. Of course, we would not judge them by their looks—no need because all cats are purrrfect! After the show, we would go for a walk by the seaside, mingle with ravens and see a double rainbow. Then it’s happy hour so us grown-ups go for a beer at Loft hostel or Sky Bar to enjoy the view. On my way home, I would stop at Reykjavík Record Shop and Lucky Records, and find some gems on vinyl.” Steinunn Jónsdóttir, Rapper Late at night: “After dinner, I meet up with my favourite girls, Reykjavíkurdæ- tur, and we’d do a crazy Beyon- cé-style stadium gig with danc- ers and a light show and many outfit changes. I don’t really know where though. Maybe in Silfurberg or on the roof of Prik- ið. Afterwards, we all go to Palo- ma for a RVK Soundsystem night and dance to some nice riddims with our eyes closed until the sun rises again.” Jono Duffy, Comedian Late at night: “It might be a stand-up show at Gaukurinn, Húrra, or Græna Herbergið, or Drag-Súgur for my monthly dose of realness. After sashaying away, I would burn up the dance floor at Kiki, then finish my night at Lebowski bar. Cut to 3 a.m., you will probably find me lining up for a slice of pizza at the Deli, waiting for a cab on Lækjagata, or admiring the headphones at 10/11 because, as much as I pretend I’m a differ- ent kind of drunk because I came from another country, I’m still a child with no spatial awareness.” Read full Perfect Days at gpv.is/perfd.
