Reykjavík is an ever-chang-
ing city, with rapidly evolv-
ing neighbourhoods and new
places popping up all the time.
Whether you’re fresh off the
plane and want to try the most
talked-about new café, or a
local or repeat visitor on the
lookout for something new,
here are some ideas.
Shop: Fjallraven
Laugavegur 67
Swedish outerwear brand Fjäll-
räven, which was founded way
back in 1960, has opened a
branch on Laugavegur in Reyk-
javík. Their classic rucksack
is so durable that they’ve been
known to become family heir-
looms, passed down to kids by
parents who, presumably, grew
up and got briefcases and fancy
handbags instead. Also on sale
are sturdy walking boots, hiking
trousers, and various version of
the 1978 Kånken school bag de-
sign, which is still seen adorning
the backs of hipsters, krútties
and exchange students today. JR
Museum: Tales from
Iceland

This video exhibition takes you
directly into the heart of Iceland
through two radically different
perspectives. On the first floor,
look at the country through the
eyes of foreigners with a diverse
range of videos showcasing ev-
erything from an American art-
ist holed up in the Borgarnes
countryside to foreign children
whining about Icelandic weath-
er. Upstairs, learn from the lo-
cals in a news video exhibition
that will basically teach you ev-
erything you need to know about
Iceland in under 40 minutes.
For instance—while you might
have gone crazy for the Icelandic
footballers at the Euros, did you
know Iceland’s only world cham-
pionship win is at bridge? HJC
Shop: Geysir Heima

A new addition to the Geysir
clothing store mini-empire,
Geysir Heima is an upscale
homewares emporium that
seemed to sprout out of the
ground fully formed at the end
of last year. They sell a uniformly
desirable selection of geometric
furniture, fancy shelving, vases
and crockery, wall prints, toilet-
ries, bikes and more. A diverse
range of designers are on sale,
including Andrée Jardin, Auður
Ómarsdóttir, Korkimon, Usee,
WDLND, Yield and ystudio. JR
Restaurant: Nostra
Laugavegur 59
The Nostra crew have set them-
selves astronomical ambi-
tions—they strive to become
the best fine-dining restaurant
in Iceland. Specialising in inven-
tive but tasty set menus made
from local ingredients, they are
slowly rolling out additions,
with a botanical room recently
opening and optional non-al-
coholic drinks pairings coming
soon. The prices are on the lower
end of the fine-dining scale. One
to watch. SP
Shop: Fischer
Fischersund 3
Fischer, a new art space and
shop, has recently opened in
downtown Reykjavík. It was
founded by musician Jónsi of Sig-
ur Rós, and his siblings—one of
whom is the band’s namesake—
and treads the line between
store and art and design space.
There have already been several
music performances in Fisch-
er by friends and family of the
founders, who played between
shelves of toiletries, candles,
art, home decor objects, records,
and more. There’s a general glow
of positive energy surrounding
this sparky, intriguing project—
we’re looking forward to seeing
how it evolves. JR
