pality is the Mayor (in Reykjavik called borgar-
stjori, in other towns bsejarstjori), and the
magistrate is the Sheriff (bsejarfogeti). In some
instances both offices are filled by one and the
same person.
Iceland has no army or navy, and by the Union
Act her perpetual neutrality is established. Ry
power of the same Act she is represented abroad
by the diplomatic and consular representatives
of Denmark.
Revenues The revenues of the fiscal year of
and 1925 balanced at 16.281.000 kr., the
Expenditure, revenues exceeding the expenditure by
5.269.000 kr. This surplus has partly
been utilized for wiping out the Floating Debt,
which on Jan. 1st 1925 amounted to 3.900.000 kr.,
the remainder being entered under Expenditure
as increase of cash in hand.
The following figures indicate in a rough way
the principal sources of revenue as well as their
respective yield, and similarly also the distribu-
tion of the expenditure:—
