landic currency rose in value during these two
years. The krona fell to a minimum of 0,47 in
March 1924, but at the end of that year it had
mounted to 0,03, while at the end of 1925 its par
value was 0,815.
Imports during 1924 amounted to 60.000.000 cur-
rency kronur, or approximately 32.000.000 gold
kronur. Sufficient data for 1925 are not available,
but imports are hound to have increased from the
previous year, owing especially to the great expansion
of the fishing fleet, which involves increase in the
imports of salt, coal, oil, etc. But the value of the
currency having, as already explained, advanced,
it is thought unlikely that the imports of 1925 will
have exceeded 60.000.00 currency kronur, or
44.000.000 gold kronur.
Measures, Weights, The metric system of weights
and Coinage. and measures is obligatory in
Iceland. The monetary system
is the same as in other Scandinavian countries. The
unit is the krona (pi. kronur) which is divided into
100 aurar (sg. cijrir). Metal coins are: 1 eyrir, 2,
5, 10, and 25 aurar; 1 krona and 2 kronur. At par
the equivalent of a pound sterling is 18 kronur.
Banking. There are two banks in the country, the
Landsbanki (National Bank) and the ts-
landsbanki (Bankof Iceland),each with four branch
offices in the provinces. The former is entirely a
state institution, and the latter, though owned by a
joint-stock company, is under a strict Government
supervision. Both issue notes for 5, 10, 50, and 100
