scholarly work of considerable historical interest, but
otherwise quite antiquated.

F. Howell: Icelandic Pictures. London 1893. A valuable
book, written with a remarkable insight into the Ice-
landic national character, but in many respects its
description of life in Iceland does not apply to the
present time.
W. P. Kerr: Epic and Romance. London 1896 (2nd ed 1908).
The Dark Ages. London 1904. These are classic works.
W. A. Craigie: The Icelandic Sagas. Cambridge 1913. An
acknowledged masterpiece. Other books by the same

Knut Gjerset: History of Iceland. London and New York
1924. A work of great merit.
Grammars and Text-books of Icelandic, Old as well as
Modern, are published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. See

highest standing.

Th. Thoroddsen: Island. Copenhagen 1919.
Daniel Bruun: Turislruler paa Island. Copenhagen 1921. As
a handbook for the traveller in Iceland this work
is absolutely unrivalled. It is profusely illustrated.
