Procedure: The experiment started 11. June and ended 31. October.
In the experiment there were 100 ewes, 60 had twins and 40 single
lambs. The same number of lambs were of each sex. From 11. June
to 6. August the design was as in previous years (see RALA Report
Nq. 50), except pasture 121 was left out. During 6. August all the
sheep were pulled off pastures 152, 162 and 172. Also 5 ewes with
lambs (3 with twins and 2 with singles) were taken from pastures 111
and 131. From these sheep 2 average lambs from each pasture were
slaughtered (10 lambs), but the others (53 lambs) put on a common
mountain pasture with their dams. The lambs that were left on the
experimental pastures (64 lambs) were slaughtered 28. September. At
the same time half of the lambs were put up in the commons 6. August
(27 lambs) were slaughtered but the other half was put on kale until
slaughtering 31. October. Anthelmintics were administered at the
beginning of- the experiment and also 6. August.
2. Plant preference experiment:
Persons in charge: Sigurjón Jónsson Bláfeld and Olafur Gudmundsson.
Experimental site and vegetation: Pastures 111, 131, 151 and 161 in the
raanagement experiment.
Experimental design and procedure: The experiment started on 6. August and
ended 26. September, but in addition samples were collected 25. and
26. October in connection with the Autum grazing experiment (See later).
Four exopheagal fistulated ewes were used to collect samples, two days
every week. The ewes were kept in two groups^ one grazing the culti-
vated land and one grazing the uncultivated land during each collection
period. During the time when no collection took place the ewes were
grazed with other sheep in the experimental pastures. Approximately
100 samples were collected during the experimental period.
3. Autumn grazing experiment.
Persons in charge: Olafur Gudmundsson and Halldor Palsson.
Experimental site and vegetation: Mostly the same as in the management
experiment.
Experimental design and procedure: During 26. September 50 lambs from a
common mountainous range divided into 5 even groups. The groups got
the following treatments until at slaughtering 31. October:
