SÅLUS ETERNA
MS: A. Fac. 1,1. 1 — fac. 2,1. 1; only the latter part of the sequence,
in a defective form; the first word preserved is /terjrea in v. 3b (6).
Text printed in AH 53, No. 1.
There are no textual differences from AH.
According to AH this sequence is found in about 40 MSS., which
are listed (“the number could easily be increased”); the oldest ones
date from the lOth century, others from the following centuries, until
print came into use.
The MSS. are mainly found in France and England — none of
them in Germany, where on the whole no Advent sequences seem to
have been in use (the same applies to Denmark, Sweden, and Ice-
land). Nor do the words of this sequence appear in any German
printed missal; on the other hånd they are not uncommon in French,
English and other printed missals, including Missale Nidrosiense.
The title, designating metre and melody, is “Ostende maior”, or
“Ostende celso”, which alludes to the Versiculus in the Graduale on
the First Sunday in Advent: “Ostende nobis ...” etc.
This sequence has the same metre and melody as that of De SS.
Apostolis “Clare sanctorum senatus”, except that the latter has an
additional verse, with melody, at the beginning.
As it is desirable to present the music of the whole sequence, and
not only of the parts of it which are to be found in the fragments
of A, the rest is taken from “Hymn-Melodies and Sequences ... from
the Sårum Service Books ...”, for which the abbreviation “Sar.”
is used.
