DOMINICA III. ADVENTUS - DOMINICA IV. ADVENTUS
It has been thought that sequences of this form, viz. without paral-
lelism, represent the earliest stage of development.
Some attempt at parallelism, however, shows itself in the music of
this sequence, in that the following syllables of the first two verses
have the same notes:
Qui re-gis scep-tra for-ti dex- .......... lus cun-cta.
Te ple-bi tu- am os-ten-de ................ ten- ci-am.
But a full parallelism is prevented by the unequal number of syl-
lables.1
Where the two MSS. overlap, a few notes do not correspond.
In AH about 30 MSS. are mentioned, mostly French and English.
IUBILEMUS OMNES UNA
MSS: A. Fac. 4; begins with splendencia in v. 3b (5), ends with Qui
pro in v. 6a (8); only half of each line is preserved. — B. Fac. 40,1. 3
— fac. 41, 1. 1; the text from discur [runt] in v. 4b (6) to corda in
v. 7 (10) is lacking.
Text printed in AH 53, No. 4.
Textual differences from AH in B: 3a (4) quod] quo (occurs, ac-
cording to AH, only in two English MSS.), 3a (4) diversa] + sunt,
3b (5) cetera]+-que, 4a (6) plana] plena (probably a slip of the
pen), 4b (6) spatia, qua] spaciaque (for spacia, que, cf. AH), 7 (10)
regas] reges (not found elsewhere), 7 (10) des] dones.
Transcription of B and A taken together. A transcription of the
same sequence in Troparium MS. Cicestrense saec. 13, Cod. Colleg.
Oxonien. 148, here called Ox, which supplies the music where it is
lacking in B and A, is also given.
1. In a French MS. of this sequence from the llth century parallel verses are
added, written under the older ones, which proves that the sequence originally
had no parallelism, because in the Middle Ages two or more lines of text which
have the same melody are normally never written under one and the same series
of music notes. Therefore in other MSS. which have taken up the additional verses,
these are placed after the original ones, the music being written once more. Ac-
cordingly our MSS. depend upon sources which did not contain the added lines
of text.
