LUX FULGET HODIERNA - MAGNUS DEUS IN UNIVERSA TERRA
Text printed in AH 53, No. 220.
Textual differences from AH in A: 7b (13) fulgidam] fulgida,
7b (13) dextera] dexteram, 8a (14) concita] conscita; — in h: 2a (2)
ubique omnia] omnia ubique, 3b (5) dignanter] digniter, 7b (13)
fulgidam] fulgida, 8b (15) orans] orat.
In the following transcription of the music, some notes which are
missing in h and our fragments of A have been restored from the
Oxford MS. employed for a similar purpose in the sequence “Nato
canunt omnia” (p. 13).
A peculiarity of the melody of this sequence as it appears in Ox
is that it begins uncommonly deep, — a fourth below that of the
MS. h, to which it does not correspond until “in” (C); the notes
for “Magnus deus” are in Ox: m'A
It is also noteworthy, that from v. 8 on, A presents the melody
a fifth higher than h does, and is in this respect in agreement with
Ox, although some note or other may differ. From the middle of v.9
on, where A fails, the missing music has been substituted from Ox
in small notes.
A concluding “Amen” does not appear in Ox, as is the case in
most of the French, English and Norwegian sequence MSS.; here,
however, the Norwegian MS. has, exceptionally, an “Amen”, but
not in the Roman Catholic melody form; the Icelandic MS., on the
other hånd, concludes the sequence with an “Amen” in that form.
