EPIPHANIAM DOMINO - FESTA CHRISTI OMNIS
In AH about 70 MSS. are enumerated, mostly French, some Eng-
lish, and a few Italian, Spanish, and Belgian.
As previously stated (p. 33), this sequence form is an enlargement
of that of "Hane concordi famulatu”, whose form must be considered
the original one, because it is the text of that sequence which has
given this one its name.
The relation between these two forms is as follows:
V. 1 of “Hane concordi”, which has no parallel verse, corresponds
to v. la of “Epiphaniam”, to which a v. Ib is added, although not
with a precise repetition of the music; there is a difference in the
beginning. The music of this additional half-verse, however, is taken
from v. 2a of “Hane”, and it is repeated in v. 2b there.
V. 2 of “Epiph.” is, in metre and music, like v. 3 of “Hane”, except
that two syllables with notes are added in the beginning of either
half -verse.
The verses 3 and 4 of “Epiph.” have no connection with “Hane”,
and are thus an independently composed addition. The next three
verses however (vv. 5-7 of “Epiph.”), mainly use the metrical and
musical form of vv. 4-6 of “Hane”, apart from some slight alterations.
V. 8 of “Epiph.” repeats the music of v. 2 ( = v. 3 of “Hane)”.
The last verse has the same metrical and musical form in both
sequences, except that “Epiph.” adds 3 syllables in the second
verse line.
