CLARIS VOCIBUS INCLITA - VICTIME PASHALI LAUDES - SURGIT CHRISTUS
VICTIME PASCHALI LAUDES
Of the sequence In Resurrectione Domini “Victime paschali laudes”
nothing has so far been found in our medieval MSS. It is just pos-
sible that a little of the last part of it appears on a fragment of J
(Fac. 86, 11. 1-3); but most probably this belongs to “Surgit Christus
cum tropheo”, which often, as is the case in h, has the same ending
as “Victime ..
The Missale Nidrosiense has the text, including that of v. 4a,
“Credendum est..which is omitted in the form of the sequence
now in use in the Roman Catholic Church.
The Danish Hymn-Book printed in 1569 (see under “Grates nunc
omnes”) gives the music of this sequence, which corresponds to the
form published by Moberg (No. 5a); the same melody is also con-
nected with “Virgini Marie laudes”, a transcription of which will be
given under that heading.
The text is printed in AH 54, No. 7, where a great number of
MSS. are collated. It is considered that Wipo from Burgundy (d. after
1048), chaplain of the Emperor Conrad II, is the author (and com-
poser?).
P. Wagner (op. cit., p. 497) says: “Ungemein beliebt war in den deut-
schen Gauen Wipos Ostersequenz Victimae paschali laudes. Den
besten Beweis dafiir liefern Umdichtungen ihres Textes auf die Jung-
frau Maria, die dann mit der Weise des Originals gesungen wurden.”
He prints the melody with both Easter and Maria texts under it.
SURGIT CHRISTUS CUM TROPHEO
MSS: J. Fac. 86, 11. 1-3; either the end of this sequence or of “Vic-
time paschali” (only parts of vv. 5-7 in “Victime paschali” are
preserved here and they also occur in “Surgit Christus”, see below).
— h. Fac. 216, 1. 16 — fac. 218, 1. 3.
Text printed in AH 54, No. 230. The verses 1-4 on p. 364 are to
be combined with vv. 5 ff. on p. 366; this gives the original sequence,
which is a dialogue with Mary Magdalen, but in the version on
P- 365 it is adapted to the Holy Virgin. The verses 8a-b (15-16)
