The melody lies uncommonly high — already in our MSS. (see
“benignissimi” and “facinora” in v. 7, where it ascends to b’ flat),
and still more so in the ms. Wintoniense from v. 13 on; on “Paracliti”
and “Expectamus” in v. 14, it ascends to
There can be no question of men singing this part, only boys, so
that the music is here no longer written an octave up (as for tenors),
but in loco as for treble voices.
When a syllable has notes in two different heights, this signifies
(apart from a difference between two MSS.) a difference in the
repetition of a half-verse in the same MS., the notes with their
