The preceding liturgy shows that the place of the sequence was
on Dominica in Albis.
The meaning of the title of the melody, “Frigdola”, is unknown.
The music of the 2nd verse is very uncertain in our MS. Schubiger
has this sequence, words and music, as No. 11, transcribed from
Cod. S. Gallensis 546; and the last part, missing in our MS., is
supplied from this in the following transcription, in small notes and
bracketed letters. In the part of the sequence contained in our
MS., small notes indicate the instances where the melody given by
Schubiger differs from it.
It is remarkable that the music of the S. Gallen MS. uses Gothic
tops (rises and fails: a-c-a, or d-f-d) whereas that of the Icelandic
MS. uses Romanesque ones (a-b-a, or d-e-d). The instances are
marked by an asterisk. In the missing part also, the latter MS. must
of course have used Romanesque tops, so that here the notes under
the asterisks are to be lowered to the next note below, in order to get
an adequate impression of the missing part of our MS., at least as
far as these melody-tops are concerned.
From the two forms of melody-tops one might infer that the
Icelandic MS. is derived from a French or English source, and not
from a German one.
The Icelandic MS. no doubt added an “Amen” with the notes
G-a-G F-G at the end.
