22ND JAN. DE S. VINCENTIO
celebrer] celebrat, 4a (7) parcentem] parentem, 4b (8) intendit]
intentat, 5b (10) Rapit ab] Capit in, 7a (13) figitur] fungitur, 8a
(15) Sic] Hic, 8a (15) caeli, terrae] celo terra, 8b (16) nobis] clara,
9b (18) is omitted (and there is no “Amen”, with which the sequences
in MSS. from Iceland very often end).
The mode of the music seems for the most part to be Dorian (on
D, with b natural); but in vv. 6 and 7 b flat appears, making the
mode Aeolian, transposed to D. In the following transcription this
change of modes has been observed, although the mode was probably
intended to be Aeolian all through, the flat for the note b having
been omitted by oversight where it is lacking. (The last syllable of
v. 9a with its note or notes is cut off; the notes F-D here are a con-
jecture.)
A curious thing appears in the music of v. Ib. Its first line is
supposed to repeat the music of the first line of v. la; but on “cer-
tan-” it anticipates the music of “egregi-” in v. la. It seems that
the writer knew the melody of the first line of v. la by heart, and
relying on his memory wrote the melody of the first line of v. Ib
without looking at his source, and that, although he remembered the
melodic train fairly well, he has, in his impatience and haste, come
to the end of the original melody too soon, and has had to invent
something new for the following syllables. (A similar procedure —
bar the notation, of course — is found occasionally in folk song.)
