SOLLEMPNITAS SANCTI PAULI - CELI ENARRANT GLORI AM
(b) Ad- iu- tos pre- ce pau-li san-cta al- le- lu- la.
In AH 17 MSS. and 10 printed missals are enumerated.
The melody is found in all countries except Germany. It appears
from the sources that the sequence was wide-spread in England; but
whether it originated there, is doubtful, according to AH.
CELI ENARRANT GLORI AM
MSS: h. Fac 252, 11. 1-7; begins with v. 11 a (before that the end of
the last word in 10b can be seen, apparently -m, but according to
AH it ought to be -ns); a vertical strip is cut off the inner edge. —
I. Fac. 310, 1. 6 (in 1. 5 a heading: Sequentia de apostolis) — fac. 311,
1. 14; here too a vertical strip is cut off the inner edge.
Text printed in AH 50, No. 267.
Textual differences from AH in both: 11a suscita terram nostram]
suscitet (-tat i) terra nostra, 12b divisione] festiuitate (but above this
in h is written: diuisione), 12b pacis] +unum; — in 1: 4b resurgens]
+ in, 6a adiit] addiit, 6b Philippus]+et, 7a teram] terram, 9a sae-
cula] seculum, 10a quorum] chorum, 10b iustem] iustum.
It is worthy of note that in both sources another Apostle-sequence,
namely “Clare sanctorum senatus”, begins immediately after the
conclusion of this sequence, which shows that the two sequences
were regarded as alternatives for the same day.
But “Clare sanctorum senatus”, in AH and elsewhere, is quite as
decidedly referred to Commune Sanctorum as “Celi enarrant” to
the Division of the Apostles.
What connection the writers of our MSS. thought existed between
these two sequences we do not exactly know; but we can perceive
a preference for the Commune Sanctorum in the faet that in “Celi
enarrant” the word “festivitate” has been substituted for “divisione”
in v. 12b. In h the right word is written in small letters above the
substituted one, which may indicate that the writer had an inkling that
“Celi enarrant” does not belong among the Commune-sequences, but
to the 15th July.
