ioTH AUG. DE S. LAURENTIO
LAURENTI DAVID MAGNI
MSS: A. Fac. 22,1. 4 (the first words of the sequence), fac. 23-fac. 24,
1. 1 (the end from v. 6a (10) onwards, but half of each line is lacking).
— h. Fac. 245, 11. 1-2; the end from 7a (12) onwards.
Text printed in AH 53, No. 173.
The music of this sequence will not be transcribed here, because
it is the same as that of “Iohannes Iesu Christo”. Our sources for
that sequence do not always agree with each other on the notes,
and we do not know which of them to choose beyond the limits
of our scanty sources for “Laurenti David”. We can only say that
the notes in A for the first seven syllables of “Laurenti” are the
same as those which i has in “Iohannes”.
In v. 6, A uses (at least one of) the lower notes (not as in C). And
in v. 7, where h comes in, the two agree (aside from some miswrit-
ing in v. 7a in h, corrected in 7b). Only v. 8, the sources of which
differ from each other in “Iohannes”, will be transcribed here —
with more divergences:

In AH 75 MSS. are enumerated. “In Deutschland und Italien ist
die Verbreitung beider Sequenzen (i. e. “Iohannes Iesu Christo” and
“Laurenti David magni”) ziemlich gleich; in England und Frankreicb
aber kam diese Sequenz weniger in Aufnahme, als jene, und fand
auch dort keinen Eingang in die gedruckten Missalien. — Notker
als Verfasser nachzuweisen, auch nur mit Wahrscheinlichkeit, wird
nicht leicht fallen.”
