INTERNI FESTI GAUDIA - PRECURSOREM . . . HUIUS ORTUM
PRECURSOREM... HUIUS ORTUM
MS: i. Fac. 271; begins with v. 4a (7) leuitatis.
Text printed in AH 55, No. 179.
Textual differences from AH: 4a (7) palpans] palpat (as in most
MSS.), 6a (11) vis] ius, 6a (11) adcrescit] accessit, 6b (12) Stultus
servit] Hostis seuit, 7b (14) dat, saltatrix] saltatrix dat (as in most
MSS.), 8b (16) es isti] est iusti, 9r (17) Nos] Nam.
Another sequence with the same beginning is discussed on pp.
193 ff.
AH says: “Die Melodie ist in 4 Formen iiberliefert; R (a French
MS.) versucht eine Adaptierung an die Melodie von “Lauda Sion
salvatorem”.” Unfortunately, vv. 1-3 are missing in our source;
but its melody for the remaining part, transcribed here, shows no
resemblance either to “Lauda Syon” or to any other melody in
our collection.
In our source the music contains no b flat, using the Dorian
mode. This, however, results in a tritonus in v. 5, on “(liga)tus in”.
Here, at least, our musical sense would demand a b flat; but should
this note be used on the following “(car)ce(re)” too, the ending of
this verse would become Phrygian, which is an unlikely mode in
this connection. On the other hånd, if this b natural is taken not
as a sequel to F, but as the beginning of the cadence transposed a
fifth up, this “diabolus in musica” may not be so hard.
