DE S. MARTYRE VEL CONFESSORE
“Alle andere Quellen schliessen die 6. Str. mit dem hohen d, die 7.
mit a”, except 3 sources “welche die 7. Str. mit d, die folgenden
mit G schliessen.”
As already indicated, all the 4 sequences in this collection using
this melody begin v. 6 (5) with the notes a, c, d (or an enlargement
of them); and a glance at the respective transcriptions shows that
the verse ends with d; thus the music of the whole verse lies a fourth
higher than in Moberg, that is, in accordance with 9 of his 11 sources.
A similar conformity with the same majority of the said sources is
found in the next (7th = 6th) verse, in that here “Laus”, “Sancti”,
and “Organicis” according to MS. r begin and end with a, while
“Adest” (in B) uses d instead, which “Organicis” does too in V.
From v. 8 (7) on, the level of the melody answers to that of
Moberg, as regards “Laus”, “Sancti”, and “Organicis” in r. In
“Adest” there seems to be an error in the beginning of v. 7 in B
(which gives very doubtful notes, because the staves are mostly
not visible); but the verse certainly ends with G, and so do the
rest. In “Organicis”, V, from where it comes in (v. 6), agrees with
B (and gives a more correct beginning for v. 7).
The mode of the music in “Laus tibi”, according to our sources,
is Aeolian, with final D and b flat; in “Sancti baptiste” it is Dorian,
with final D and b natural. This is the case also with “Organicis”,
according to r.
With “Adest nobis” the case is not so clear. It begins with the
Dorian mode, which, according to B, changes towards the end to
having G for final, but still with b natural, that is, Mixolydian
mode. This, according to V, from where it comes in, is the case
with “Organicis” too. But in “Adest” again, A, which reappears
towards the very end after a lacuna, shows the sign of b flat, although
the final is G here too (the same is found in the Oxford MS.); the
mode should, then, become Dorian here, transposed to G.
In AH 42 MSS. are enumerated.
