may not be arrested while the Althing is in session,
though they may and do sometimes receive tickets.
Otherwise I can say that some of our leading
citizens have been overnight guests. I’ve found it
interesting that people no longer resist arrest.
They submit peacefully though there is no added
punishment for resisting arrest.
Q. Are there insurance and retirement benefits?
A. Both. Retirement may be at 65 but is compul-
sory at 70. Most men are career policemen.
Q. Do you enjoy your job?
A. Yes, I do. It is satisfying work to help people
become good citizens. We stress the fact that
policemen are the servants of the people, not their
punishers, and our three commandments are: Pro-
tect the citizens, Enforce the law, and Prevent
lawbreaking.
Q. Considering the moral system here, one would
expect a low incidence of rape, yet there seem to
be many child assault cases.
A. Our women police handle delinquent girls,
advise venereal disease treatment and handle child
assault and rape. Of course many instances of
adult rape and assault in the U.S. are due to racial
violence, which is not the case here. We do, how-
ever, have comparatively more such assaults on
children than among adults, and every case is
one too many. The summer season is bright and
poses little problem, but our winter curfew regula-
tions of 8 p.m. for children under twelve and 10
p.m. for those under 15 are precisely to safeguard
children. With our present system of police station
and traffic tours for all seven year olds we hope
to inspire the trust of the children. They will be
our future citizens.
Q. Here is a last question: Does a pedestrian have
to wait for the lights to change when there is no
traffic at all on the streets? Will a policeman dis-
cover a timely speck in his eye ?
A. (promptly) There is a 100 kr. fine for anyone
crossing a street on a red light. (Pause). Of course
most of our streets are narrow and it doesn’t take
a minute to hop over them. But there is a law . ..
So far it hasn’t been enforced.
