THE MIDNIGHT SUN
FRÍMERKI.
FOR those having sons and
younger brothers who col-
lect stamps, the field at jjres-
ent as regards Europe is terrib-
ly restricted, so we might use
our visit to this country as a
means of replenishing a page
in the stamp album usually al-
most blank.
Authorities haive foirbidden
„the collection or snaring of
eggs“, but although many
stamps are like miniature pic-
ture-postcards, tlie collection
and sending liome of stamps
is apparently permissible, and
for those inclined to foster this
liohby (or disease) a visit to
the top storey of the wireless
building in the centre of the
town will be well rewarded.
Here in an admirable fashi-
on stamps, current and obso-
lete are officially sold at face
value, thus removing all deal-
ers’ profits, and for the asking
any stamp may be officially
„postmarked“.
Iceland offers a varied and
interesting selection and many
obsolete issues are on view, in-
cluding stamps bearing the
heads of King Christian IX and
X and Frederik VIII.
A set of the Millenary cele-
bration A.D. 930—1930 is worth
acquiring with weird and
wonderful designs of Vikings,
their shiiJS and settlements, a
view of Thingvellir — the
world’s most ancient parlia-
ment „house“ — and a map of
the island.
There are a dozen designs
for current stamps (following
a custom which England seems
shortsightedly backward in
adopting) showing charming
miniature coloured pictures of
the country, its art and indu-
stries.
Even if we don’t bother with
stamps or are so unfortunate
as not to have children or
younger brothers, visitors will
be well advised to acquire as
souvenirs or Christmas „cards“
(eminentlj' suitable in davs of
paper rationing) stamps de-
picting the waterfalls of Gull-
foss (60, 65, 75 aur.) and Dynj-
andi (10 aur.), Mt. Hekla (1
kr.) and other famous Iceland-
ic spots.
For a modest outly you may
buy a set of four stamps show-
ing the Geysir in its best flam-
boyant state in delicate shades
of colour (15, 20, 35, 50 aur.).
Official stamps are surcharged
„Þjónusta“ (i. e. Service).
The latest stamps are a fine
set issued in commemoration
of Iceland’s participation in
the World’s Fair, New York
(10, 25 and 45 aur. 1 and 2 kr.)
of which the most striking is
a picture of the famous statue
by Einar Jónsson of Leifr Ei-
ríksson, now at the World’s
Fair, and the most interesting,
a map of tlie Northern Hemi-
sphere marking the route of
that pioneer from Iceland to
Marvland in A.D. 1000.
THE N21VY RELAXES
AKEENLY contested game
of soccer between the
Naval Shore Staff and one of
H.M. Ships on Friday last re-
sulted in a draw, 1—1.
Tlie game opened in fast
style, and several creditable
passing movements were spoil-
ed by the defences, who, for
the most part, dominated the
play.
Anderson, the Shore Staff
left winger, was as fast as one
expects a rugby player to be,
but he was met by an equally
virile defence. Pyman, the
Shore Staff right half, spoiled
many dangerous movements
by cool judgement, but eventu-
ally the sea-going men opened
the score when Old sent in a
good shot which left the goal-
keeper with no chance, after
they had been pressing for
some time.
In the second half everybody
was obviously out of practice
and wind. Pyman’s long pass-
es gave the Shore Staff manv
chances, but their opponents’
defenders, particularly Midd-
leton, the left back, was equal
to the occasion. Until five min-
utes before the wliistle, it
seemed that the visitors were
going to hold on to their lead,
but at this point one of their
defenders deflected a long,
high pass down the centre
from Pyman into the net, with
the goalkeeper completely un-
sighted.
Both sides made desperate
efforts to take the lead in the
last few minutes, but the
whistle went with the score
1—1.
