confluence with Geldingsá we have an outcrop of interesting
layers, Fig. 13.

Explanation in the text.
1. Elevation 640 m. Brown conglomerate. The main mass
resembles very much a moraine, although striated boul-
ders were not found. At least near the surface there are
many wind-eroded pebbles, among them dreikanter. This
layer is seen on both sides of Jökulsá, and is part of a
plateau series dipping 5° (S 30°W).
2. Normally magnetized lava of porphyritic kubbaberg and
columnar structure.
3. Brown conglomerate with clearly wind-eroded stones.
4. A much disintegrated thin lava. The lava blocks have
been lifted in the covering mud (5) by frost action.
A smoothly eroded surface is seen in part, but whether
or not the result of glacial scouring is not seen.
5. Grey-brown conglomerate, mainly formed of wind-erod-
ed material.
6. Lava.
This group has a thickness of at least 100—160 m on the
west side of Jökulsá but elsewhere it is not possible to trace the
group for lack of outcrops; the slopes of the valleys are here
completely covered with debris. The group is characteristic
for the Young Plateau Basalts. Frost action and wind erosion
and wind-transport have been predominant, and conglome-
rates may resemble moraines very much. It is very likely
that we are dealing with the same rocks as the topmost ones
west of Bárðardalur. They are just erosional remnants. Be-
cause of the S—SW dip the group is not to be expected on
the Eyjafjörður side of Urðarvötn and I have not been able
