the east slope of Sveifhiháls, for also along the shore just to
the NE of the promontory the tuff of Phase I is polished and
striated.
Here, on this polished surface and on a mantle of weather-
ing higher up in the slope, was now deposited a thick layer
of coarse primary breccia which must have come from an in-
ferred volcanic fissure some 150—200 m up the slope. The
original surface of this breccia “cake” has not been so steep
to need support and such support from a glacier need not be
postulated.
Now comes lake erosion near the present level and a high
very steep cliff is formed in this breccia NE of Innri Stapi.
After this, scree began to collect below this cliff, and a thick
layered mass was formed. This must mean that the level of
the lake fell farther. One may either explain this on the basis
of tectonic disturbance in the subterraneous outlet or one
may assume a period of dryness. This is more likely as the
lake rose again and attacked the scree. Of the hardened scree
mass a patch is left while on both sides the primary breccia
is laid bare, showing in part the older cliff (Fig. 64).

Now, during the period the scree was formed volcanic ac-
tivity was renewed. One lava flowed down the scree slope
and was later covered by additional scree. Farther to the NE
a lava oozed out at the edge of the mountain and flowed down
